What causes dementia?

1. Dementia are associated with killing karma

Listener: Hello, Master! My family member has dementia, how should I help with the Little Houses?

Master Lu: Dementia is a condition with spiritual and/or karmic roots, often resistant to complete cure through conventional medical treatments. However, we can offer assistance to patients by utilizing the Dharma Gems gifted to us by Guan Yin Bodhisattva: “reciting Buddhist scriptures, practicing life liberation, and making vows.”

– The basic daily recitations are as follows: the Great Compassion Mantra 21 times, the Heart Sutra 49 times, and the Eighty-Eight Buddhas Great Repentance 5 times.

– This ailment is largely associated with karmic retributions from killing. If you or your family members have taken the lives of numerous beings, it is advisable to include the recitation of the Amitabha Pure Land Rebirth Mantra in your daily practice, reciting it 21 or 49 times per day.

– Offer >3 Little Houses to karmic creditors each week. Initially, present 49 Little Houses for the first set, then adjust the offering to 7 sheets each set until the patient is healed.

– Simultaneously, engage in making vows and practicing life liberation.

2. The cause and effect of dementia

Listener: Master, some people suffer from dementia. What are the causes of dementia?

Master Lu: Dementia is a spiritual possession. Their wisdom is short. In previous lives, those afflicted often engaged in ridiculing and speaking ill of others. Consequently, in this life, they experience dementia. This affliction results in enduring criticism and reproach from others. Is this not a form of karmic retribution?

Listener: Master, is it true that if someone generates karma in their youth, they will suffer from dementia in old age?

Master Lu: Yes, when they were young, they were very sharp-tongued and often caused trouble for others. In old age, they suffer from dementia.

Listener: I understand now. Thank you for your compassionate enlightenment, Master.

3. Excessive thinking can lead to dementia in later years

In practicing Buddhism and in life, one should maintain a straightforward mindset. This means that when contemplating issues, one’s thoughts should remain direct and unwavering. However, some individuals possess overly complex and convoluted thought patterns. When presented with straightforward information, instead of processing it straightforwardly, their minds wander through countless twists and turns, often misinterpreting the original intent. Consequently, their brain cells may deteriorate faster than those of others. This partly explains why many intelligent individuals are susceptible to dementia in old age—they simply overload their cognitive capacity. Upholding a straightforward mindset means approaching thoughts and situations directly without veering into negative interpretations. For instance, if unintentionally causing offense with a remark, it’s advisable not to dwell on explaining or rationalizing it further, as excessive explanation only complicates matters. Do you understand? Many people exhaust themselves by living in a perpetual state of explanation. In Buddhist practice, one should cultivate a broad and inclusive mentality, akin to the vastness of the sea that assimilates all rivers, regardless of their purity. Even individuals with negative traits can transform within the compassionate embrace of Buddhism, for its teachings are boundless. This is the essence. Do you comprehend? Therefore, it’s essential to view all sentient beings with equality.
